Here we have a variety of designs drafted up by rangatahi that we connect with. The whakaaro is that, as a collective (Te Ao Hangarau me ngā rangatahi), we will concept design for a resource we are developing completely in-house. The resource will capture the story of Waihiko, the lost atua (story also developed in-house with appropriate cultural guidance).
"Waihiko was the daughter of Tama-nui-te-ra, the sun. She was known among the atua as a playful, incredibly fast being and, one fateful morning, challenged her Pāpā to a race across the sky. It so happened that this was the very same morning Māui and his brothers colluded to capture and slow Tama-nui-te-ra. The aggression of the demi-god and his human brothers terrified Waihiko. She fled, the anguished cries of her father ringing behind her, and hid for millennia.
"Thus, human beings were unaware of her existence and whakapapa, until she was brought back into human consciousness in 1879, when Thomas Edison ensnared her in a lightbulb. Since then, we have been able to see the vast applications of her powers through electricity and into the digital world and ipurangi, the internet."
These designs depict what our rangatahi imagine when they think of Waihiko and incorporate imagery around fire, electricity, the digital world in general and Mana Wahine - all combined with an overarching Māori ahua.
We're seeing some dope concepts ranging from a focus on the Māoritanga with moko designs and the apparel, to more ability based designs with the fire around her legs and lightning effects.
Seeing some cool hairstyle designs and starting to see some weaponry in the patu. Keep the designs coming!
